What Happens During Your Dog’s Initial Canine Physiotherapy Consultation?

Essentially, your dog’s first appointment is designed to give me a complete understanding of their health, movement and individual needs, allowing me to create a personalised treatment and rehabilitation plan.

Initial Information Gathering

Before your appointment, I will gather background information about your dog, including medical history, previous injuries, surgeries, current medications, and any other relevant details. When required, I will liaise with your veterinary surgeon and any other professionals involved in your dog’s holistic care to ensure I have the fullest clinical picture.

Comprehensive Assessment

First, the consultation begins with a discussion about your dog’s behavioural history, current concerns, exercise routine and daily management. I will then carry out a comprehensive physiotherapeutic assessment, evaluating posture, conformation, musculature, movement quality, neurological function and joint health to identify the factors influencing their mobility and wellbeing.

Treatment and Tailored Rehabilitation Plan

Using the findings from the assessment, I will provide targeted physiotherapy treatment based on your dog’s individual needs and the goals we establish together. Depending on the case, treatment may include massage, stretching, myofascial release, joint mobilisations, PEMF therapy, Photizo therapy, and hot or cold therapy where appropriate.

Following treatment, we’ll develop a bespoke rehabilitation or conditioning programme designed to encourage correct movement patterns, promote healing, improve strength and support long-term mobility and performance. You’ll also receive practical home management advice to help your dog continue progressing between appointments.

Written Reports and Veterinary Collaboration

Finally, after your appointment, you’ll receive a detailed written report summarising the assessment findings, treatment provided and your dog’s personalised exercise programme. Where appropriate, I can also liaise directly with your veterinary surgeon and any other professionals involved in your dog’s care, ensuring a coordinated and collaborative approach to your dog’s ongoing rehabilitation.

My primary base is in Essex, though I’m happy to travel further afield upon request. I also cover occasional appointments in Thetford, where I regularly travel for my own dogs’ training. Additionally, this map offers a general guide to travel zones — if you’re ever unsure, please get in touch and I’ll be happy to provide a personalised quote.

Please note: appointments involving travel into London, or across the Dartford Crossing, will require a personalised quote. Important Information

Veterinary Consent

In accordance with the Veterinary Surgeons Act 1966, veterinary physiotherapy for animals with a diagnosed medical condition or following surgery requires consent from your veterinary surgeon.

If your dog has an existing injury, medical condition, lameness, or is currently under veterinary care, then I will need to obtain your vet’s consent before treatment can begin. After that, simply provide your veterinary practice’s details on the patient registration form, and I will liaise with them directly on your behalf to arrange this.

Legalities

Importantly, by completing the patient registration form you are confirming you have read, understood, and agree to the practice’s Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy, and that you’re happy for treatment to proceed.

Please contact me if you have any questions.
